May is Motorcycle Awareness Month - Look Twice, Save a Life

May is Motorcycle Awareness month and all drivers have a responsibility to educate themselves on how to share the road with motorcyclists. Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer, provides motorcycle awareness tips for all drivers on the road.
Last year in North Carolina, nearly 3,500 people were injured in crashes involving motorcycles and 147 people lost their lives. Over half of the fatal motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle, and more often than not the primary fault lies with the four-wheeled driver. This is not to say that bikers are always blameless, but there are a few things that all drivers should be aware of to reduce the number of traffic incidents involving motorcycles.

  • A second look is always worthwhile – When a driver looks in their mirror, they should look again, from every possible angle, before they maneuver. At first glance, a motorcycle can be hidden in a blind spot, either inside the vehicle or outside.
  • Motorcycles behave differently on the road – Because they are smaller, motorcycles can seem like they are further away than is true, or going slower than is the case. When a driver notices a motorcycle, they should assume that more space and warning is required than it may seem – it is always better to be safe than sorry.
  • Motorcycles adjust position within lanes – There are valid reasons for this, such as the rider attempting to stay out of people’s blind spots and increase their own visibility (and safety), or avoid debris or dangerous turbulence.

Defensive driving tips for motorcyclists are important as well and something all bikers should learn to proactively keep themselves safe on the road. BikeSafeNC also invites motorcyclists to participate in a free “Rider Skills Day” class that offer an assessment of current driving skills and advice to help make their experience as a motorcyclist safer and more enjoyable.  For more information, including a full schedule of classes, visit the BikeSafeNC website.
