Grass Clippings on the Road can be Deadly for Motorcyclists

Grass Clippings on the Road can be Deadly for Motorcyclists

When grass clippings come between a motorcycle’s tires and the pavement, it's a major safety hazard. These clippings are not getting cleaned up and no one thinks about this from the perspective of a motorcycle rider. This is like driving on glass for a motorcycle. It’s a very dangerous situation. A motorcyclist needs a contact patch between the tires and the asphalt, especially on curves. Motorcyclists may have to take unexpected safety measures to avoid wiping out. They may slow down, switch lanes, or cross over a double yellow line to avoid grass clippings.

Our local CBA chapters have been working on changing the law to protect bikers from this issue. House Bill 104 is currently working its way through the legislature and would change NC littering laws to include grass clippings and leaves on streets. Some (obviously non-riders) view it as just another overstep of government. However, it’s backed by powerful House Speaker Tim Moore, who understands the safety hazard this creates for bikers.

Get in touch with your local CBA chapter for updates on this and other legislative issues. As riders, these issues affect you daily so get involved. Reach out to your local legislators and make your voices heard.
